The guide
01
What Miami actually is
Miami is the second-largest city in Florida and the center of a metropolitan area of nearly 6.1 million people, the largest in the state. What most visitors refer to as Miami actually encompasses two separate municipalities: the city of Miami and Miami Beach, which sits on a barrier island to the east, separated from the mainland by Biscayne Bay. Miami Beach holds the beach resorts and summer tourism; Miami is the urban, financial, and Latin core. This guide covers the city of Miami. Landmarks associated with the broader metro area, such as Miami Zoo and Inter Miami CF's stadium, fall outside city limits.
02
Historical and cultural context
The city's modern expansion was driven by Flagler's railroad, which connected South Florida to the rest of the country. The Overseas Highway followed, linking the Florida Keys to the mainland. A devastating hurricane in 1926 interrupted that growth and sent the city into a temporary recession; Roosevelt's New Deal support helped rebuild it. During World War II, much of South Florida was converted into a military base, with dedicated training in anti-submarine warfare. After the Cuban Revolution, Miami became the primary destination for Cuban immigrants, and today holds the largest Latin American population outside Latin America itself, with roughly 65% of residents of Latin origin or descent. Spanish and Haitian Creole share everyday life alongside English.
Miami Beach and Miami are separate municipalities. Travelers who book a hotel thinking they are in one are often in the other.
